About the Item

A beautiful oil painting, depicting a pack of hunting dogs in the field, made by the French artist Marie-Didière Calves. The style is somewhat impressionistic. Seen up close, a bit vague, but seen from a greater distance, a clear image with a lot of movement. The atmosphere of dogs together in the pack is beautifully depicted. The horse with the rider in the distance is also depicted with a great sense of movement. The painting is framed in a gilded wooden frame. The painting is in good condition. Georges Calvès, Marie's father, is a Parisian painter, member of the Society of French Artists. He loves the countryside and rural life, which inspire him in a constant and varied way. He represents all kinds of rural scenes: work in the fields, shepherdesses and sheep, horses, lumberjacks. This is also a reason for him to leave Paris for the countryside. Marie Calvès seems to have shown talents in painting at a very young age, further benefiting from her father's teaching. She was noticed at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1895, at the age of twelve, where she won a silver medal. The influence of her father made her debut in rural scenes, primarily with the representation of horses and sheep. But Marie quickly turns away from it to focus on the dogs. She was a member of the Society of French Artists from 1899 to 1938, and won several prizes. Calvès not only works with her easel, she creates drawings for magazines and exhibitions of hunting, hunting and dogs. Her works quickly became familiar to breeders and hunters.
