"Awaiting" Painting by Leonid Steele, Famous Ukrainian Artist

About the Item

A stunning painting by Ukrainian artist Leonid Steele titled "Awaiting", created in 1972 during the Soviet era. The painting is in the human realist style and measures 190 x 60 cm (without the frame) and 215 x 86 cm (with the original gilded wooden frame). The painting depicts a strong and youthful Ukrainian woman, symbolizing the hope for freedom. This artwork was exhibited in the Gekkoso Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo in the same year under the number "1" in the exhibition. The artist's other painting, "Mothers of the World" (1972), portrays the same woman, who is pregnant this time. On this painting, Steele wrote an important quote from Shevchenko's Kobzar in old Ukrainian, which reads: "And on the land reborn, there will be no vile enemy, but rather there will be a Son and there will be a Mother, and there will be peoples upon Earth". This painting is not only an exquisite piece of art but also a significant symbol of the hope for freedom and rebirth. The artist's personal experience of living through the famine of 1933 in Ukraine, and his passion and energy for painting, are evident in this artwork. 15% of the price of the painting will be donated to Ukrainian women, adding a layer of philanthropy to this already remarkable work of art. Leonid Steele participated in 80 exhibitions, including 11 All-Union Exhibitions in the Soviet Union, and travelled around the world with his works. He was a Lifetime Signature Member of the California Art Club and remains a living legacy of the Art of the Soviet Union. Leonid Steele passed away on October 4, 2014, in Los Angeles, California, but his art lives on as a testament to his incredible talent and vision.
