This brilliant, sun-drenched scene of four bathers in swimsuits on the edge of a cobalt-blue body of water, shows the influence of Picasso and Matisse, the Fauvists and Impressionists, and the movement from Cubism to Mid-Century Modernism in French painting. The painter, Louis Latapie, uses a color-drenched palette, contrasting the cool blues of the water with the warm sun-kissed tones of the bathers' bodies. In the lower right hand corner is the suggestion of a fifth figure, shown in profile almost a painting within a painting. Latapie exhibited widely at the Paris salons in the 1930s through the 1960s, and had many solo exhibitions over the decades. We consider this his masterpiece. (Dimensions include frame).
