"Belly up to the Bar", Depression-Era Tavern Scene by Iver Rose

About the Item
This quintessential Depression-era scene depicts a series of men at a tavern, slouching or leaning against the bar's edge and quaffing shots of hard liquor. The bar's occupants seem to be convivial and conversational, and the large man in the foreground is draining his drink while the viewer watches. The men are in drab clothes, but the artist adds bits of canary yellow and brick red to the scene, adding life and energy to the painting. Rose is best known for his work to bring attention to the plight of workers in Depression Era America. Closely associated with Chicago and the north shore of Boston, Rose worked under the auspices of the WPA in the 1930s, painting in Chicago and later moving to Rockport. The medium is gouache on paper mounted on board. The painting is signed in the lower right hand corner. (Dimensions include the frame.)
