Ó/L “Infanta Isabel de Borbón” William Gorman Wills (1828 - 1891) One of a kind and outstanding British Painting , portrait of the Infanta Isabel Fernandina de Borbón y Borbón made by the painter and playwright of Irish origin William Gorman Wills. Unlike the official portraits of the monarchy, in which the character appears characterized with the attributes of royalty, the author wanted to focus on the tenderness that emerges from the animal's gaze towards the infanta and her affectionate attitude. . The figures emerge from a dark background, against which the infanta's satin white dress and the clarity of her complexion and eyes stand out especially. She is shown in a slightly dynamic pose, with her body in profile, but looking directly at the viewer. She also highlights the excellent technique of the qualities when representing the dog's coat. It was in the genre of portraiture where William Gorman Wills captured his best abilities. In the lower area, the frame presents an identification plate with the author, the date, and the title of the work. The frame of the work itself also deserves a special mention. Made of carved and gilded wood with fine gold and burnished with agate stone, it presents several paths with extraordinary depth and different ornamental motifs. Another portrait of the Infanta, made by Carlos Luis de Ribera in 1860, is preserved in the Prado Museum. Isabel Fernandina de Borbón y Borbón was born in Madrid in 1821 and died in Paris in 1897. The first-born daughter of Francisco de Paula de Borbón and Luisa Carlota de Borbón, she was Infanta of Spain and Countess Gurowska by her marriage to the Polish count Ignacio Gurowski. Her paternal grandparents were King Charles IV of Spain and María Luisa de Parma and, maternally, King Francis I of the Two Sicilies and Infanta María Isabel de Borbón. She had a turbulent childhood, as a consequence of the numerous exiles of her parents. Her education took place mainly in Paris, until in 1838 she escaped in the company of two of her brothers to Brussels, from where they were returned to France by order of her parents. This fact caused her to enter the convent school of Oiseaux. Her mother tried to marry her to the Duke of Nemours, son of King Louis Philippe I of France, a project that failed because she was redhead and “too thin.” Shortly afterward she met Count Ignacio Gurowski, her riding teacher and a Polish exile with limited means in Paris, but who soon conquered her young woman's heart. Again, she ran away from home, this time with her lover. They both fled to England, where they married on June 26, 1841, without the permission of their cousin, Queen Elizabeth II. The queen then decided to withdraw her rank of infanta by Royal Decree. For a time, the couple lived in Brussels, where they had the support of the Belgian Royal Family, to return to Spain later. Together they had eight children. In 1850 they separated, the count settled in Paris and Isabel in Madrid. From then on she led a rather irregular life, unbecoming of her rank. After the revolution of 1868 she returned to Paris, where she reestablished her habitual residence, with sporadic returns to Spain. Of his personality, his bohemian and generous spirit stood out, although finally his assets were seized in 1879 and he fell into notorious poverty. Since then he lived in the Victoria Hotel in Paris, where he died. She was buried in the Montmartre cemetery, and the expenses of her burial had to be covered by the owner of the hotel where she resided. William Gorman Wills, commonly known as W. G. Wills, was an Irish playwright, novelist and painter. He was born at Blackwell lodge, in Kilmurry, near Thomastown, in the Irish county of Kilkenny. As a young man he was educated at Waterford Grammar School and later entered Trinity College, Dublin, where he did not obtain a degree, but did obtain the Vice-Chancellor's Medal for his poem “Poland”. He later dropped out of university and enrolled at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, where he studied painting. Although he had originally planned to study law, Wills preferred the arts. He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1852, and the Royal Academy of London in 1874. His first novel was “Old Times,” for which he also drew and engraved the illustrations. A second novel, “The Wife’s Evidence,” was adapted to the theater with great success. Wills then opted for a bohemian lifestyle, staying at the Arundel Club, and later joined the Garrick Club. Many of his works were based on historical events. “Charles I”, about the life of said English king, was one of his greatest successes, being performed for 200 nights at the Lyceum during the years 1872 and 1873. His biography, “W. G. Wills: Dramatist and Painter,” was written by his brother Freeman Wills in 1898. James Joyce alludes to him and his play “A Royal Divorce” (about the divorce of Napoleon and Josephine) numerous times in Finnegans Wake. Dimensions: 158 x 115 x 14 cm. / 115 x 70 cm.
