A painting enthusiast from an early age, he entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1840 and took private lessons in the studio of Michel Martin Drolling, whose pupils also included artists such as Paul Baudry, Jules Breton and Jean-Jacques Henner. He began his career as a naturalist painter with numerous representations of flowers and landscapes of Auvergne and Lozère - he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1845 with various portraits and landscapes - but from 1851 he devoted himself exclusively to portraits. His style, inspired by the rococo painting of the 18th century, is often compared to that of the artist François Boucher but he tries to bring more realism. He was also inspired by English portraitists such as Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds. Very appreciated by Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, they commissioned him to paint several canvases and to decorate the Opera Garnier, the Tuileries Palace and the hemicycle room of the Elysée Palace. The emperor went so far as to defend the artist whose painting "Aurore", judged too sensual, had been refused at the 1859 Salon des Artistes. He nevertheless participated in the Salon until 1868. In October 1866, he created a painting workshop for women and counted among his students Marie Josephine Nicolas, Mary Cassatt, Fanny Caillé, Louise Abéma and Louise Jopling. Naturalized French in 1886, he died on January 20, 1891 and was buried in the famous Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. His son Arthur Chaplin and his granddaughter Elisabeth Chaplin were also talented painters.
