About the Item

The painting „Frau vor Säule“ presented Chen Yun Wang / Wang Chengyun in the room “Ying”, titled Black Room of the Past. Provenance: Schenning Collection, Goslar. Oil on canvas. Signed on both sides. Chen Yun Wang, 20. September 2019, Text: Kai Hunsicker Gallant wanderer between China and Germany. Chen Yun Wang (born 1959) is one of the better known representatives of contemporary Chinese classical painting. Between 1991 and 2002 he lived in various cities in Germany on a scholarship and his master’s degree at the Braunschweig Art Academy. Since 2004 Chen Yun Wang has held a professorship at the Chengdu Academy of Fine Art in China. Art award Kaiserring scholarship holder of the Mönchehaus Goslar Since the beginning of the 1980s, the city of Goslar has been awarding the renowned Kaiserring art prize of the Mönchehaus Museum to internationally important contemporary artists. All of the prize-winning painters still dominate the art scene today, from Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter and Christo to Wolfgang Tillmans and Barbara Kruger. In 1998 Chen Yun Wang was awarded the Kaiserring Scholarship of the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar and a subsequent exhibition of his works. A look into the past: The woman in front of the column Chen Yun Wang wrote the work “Woman before Column” in 1991 shortly before his departure for Germany. It comes from the collection of the entrepreneur and art collector Th. K. Peter Schenning (1923 – 2010). Schenning was on the board of the Verein zur Förderung moderner Kunst in Goslar, which still runs the Mönchehaus Museum today. In 1998 the painting was shown publicly for the first time in Europe in the solo exhibition of Chen Yun Wang as part of the Kaiserring Scholarship Art Prize. In his work presentation in Goslar, Chen Yun Wang wanted to present two sides of his work: Past and present, the dark and the light – Ying and Yang as the two primal forces of the Asian idea of the course of the world in his own painterly interpretation. The painting “Woman in front of a column” showed Chen Yun Wang in the room “Ying”, titled Black Room of the Past. The works shown in this room were mainly paintings from his creative period in China as well as a series of paintings that had been created in Germany as reminders of China.

Franz Mörscher, still life 1953, oil on canvas
By Franz Mörscher
Located in Saarbrücken, SL
Franz Mörscher The composition of the painting is deliberately designed for reduction and corresponds to the idea of cultural minimalism and the new objectivity that developed in the 20th century. Mörscher chooses the rational, crystalline form of the representation of selected objects (vases, lemon, fruits?) and uses color as surface and line to create structure in the space. In this composition, Mörscher reduces the classical means of perspective to create a pictorial space between object light and color. The application of paint appears partially modeled. The natural crack and fissure network (Krakelee) of the sometimes layered paint application seems to be deliberately achieved. The selection of the depicted objects is possibly also based on symbolic aspects. After the desolation of the war years, the painting speaks of the color world of the spirit of optimism of the 1950s. W 63 x H 50 Measures with frame: W 71 x H 58 Biography Franz Mörscher was born on November 7th, 1931 in Bundenbach and died on July 14th, 2018 in Neunkirchen (Saar). Besides the sculptor Hubert Nietsch, he was the second artist to set a monument to the miner’s cow in public space in Germany from 1993 to 1995. Franz Mörscher studied from 1951 at the School of Arts and Crafts Saarbrücken with Boris Kleint among others in the subjects of painting and sculpture. During his studies he met the photographer Otto Steinert...
