About the Item

Circle of Divine Morales 16th century "Virgin with Child and Saint John" Oil on wood Measures: 72 x 54cm good condition. The Divine Morales Luis de Morales was born in 1510 or 1511 and probably died in 1586, perhaps in Alcántara (Cáceres), where he is known to have resided in 1585. We do not know his place of birth, but he lived and painted in Extremadura. For more than fifty years he was the most prolific and important painter of that extensive region, where he made numerous altarpieces and altar paintings, expanding his production to Portugal, especially to Évora and Elvas, cities near Badajoz. He settled in this city in 1539, after having worked in Plasencia and its surroundings, a territory where artists and influences from Flanders and Castile intermingled, explaining an essential part of Luis de Morales' painting. Knowledge of works by other artists, especially Alonso Berruguete or Sebastiano del Piombo, helped to define the style of a painter who achieved early fame thanks to his small religious-themed panels. With a marked commercial vocation, Morales adapted to the clientele of the time an artistic and devotional product with a very careful bill that linked with the Flemish traditions of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, nuanced by Italianate elements and models. Furthermore, the spiritual atmosphere of the time was subtly projected onto those pious images. Simple in their composition and very close to the believer, they added an undoubted emotional charge to their great visual effectiveness. This exhibition offers a careful review of the work of El Divino, an appellation that was explained in this way by the painter and treatise writer Antonio Palomino in the 18th century: He was known as El Divino, thus because everything he painted were sacred things, as well as because he made heads of Christ with such great delicacy and subtlety in the hair, that it causes the most curious in art to want to blow them to make them move, because it seems that they have the same subtlety as the natural ones.
