About the Item
Exotic and highly atmospheric, this nocturnal Art Deco scene of the famed Egyptian prince, Saif ul Malook, from the fairy tale by Mian Muhammad Baskh, was painted by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson (or GAN), Sweden's leading Modernist painter in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The painting shows a scene in the fantastic confines of a palace in the foreground and a moonlit mosque and minaret in the background, with the Prince stealing away with his love, Badi U Jamal, the Queen of Fairies. GAN was Sweden's most celebrated painter in the pre-World War II period, creating works influenced by Cubism, Art Deco and Surrealism. He was also openly gay, and was infatuated with the sailors who populated Sweden's ports, painting them again and again over years. This painting is watercolor and gouache on paper. It was sold at auction by Bukowski's, Sweden's leading auction house, over a decade ago. (Dimensions include matte and frame; visible painting is 12 inches high by 9.25 inches wide.)
