Emile Albert Gruppe Hauling The Nets

About the Item

Emile Albert Gruppe (American, 1896-1978) Post Impressionist Titled Verso: “Hauling The Nets” Oil on canvas Canvas: 25 x 30 inches (63.5 x 76.2 cm) Framed Dimensions 31 X 36 Inches Signed lower right: Emile A. Gruppe Condition: Excellent. Original canvas. Under UV exam, there does not appear to be inpaint. Emile Albert Grippe’s vivid Post-Impressionist-style paintings capture pastoral landscapes and harbors of the American northeast. Though his landscapes span seasons, Gruppe had an eye and affinity for the colder ones, focusing on New England’s colorful autumns and harsh winters. First Snow Vermont, a bright, wintry landscape depicting barren trees in a snowy forest, sold for $31,250 at auction in 2014. Born in Rochester, New York, Gruppe learned to paint from his father, the artist and art dealer Charles P. Gruppe, while living in the Netherlands as a child. He returned to the U.S. at the onset of World War I but continued his studies at the Art Students League of New York and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière after the war. Gruppe eventually settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he lived and worked until his death in 1978. He was a central figure among the Cape Ann School of painting, and he founded the Gloucester School of Painting, which ran until 1970. His work is in the collection of the Cape Ann Museum.

He lived the early years of his life in the Netherlands as his father, Charles P. Gruppé, painted with the Hague School of art and acted as a dealer for the Dutch painters in the United States. The family returned permanently to the States around 1913 when rumblings of World War I were brewing. All of Emile's siblings established themselves in the arts, Paulo Mesdag (1891–1979) as a cellist, Karl Heinrich (1893–1982) as a sculptor, and Virginia Helena Gruppé as a watercolorist. Gruppé studied at the National Academy in New York City and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. His artistic career began in 1915 but was briefly interrupted in 1917, when he spent a year in the United States Navy. He made his permanent studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and became a member of the Cape Ann school of artists. Although Gruppé is best known for his variety of impressionistic landscapes, he also painted figures and portraits. His modern style was largely inherited from the French Impressionist Monet. "Lily Pads", date and location unknown, one of Gruppe's landscapes, attests to Monet's influence; it is similar to some of the paintings in Monet's Water Lilies series. From 1940–1970, he ran the Gloucester School of Painting at Rocky Neck, on Smith Cove in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was the teacher of other famous artists including oil painter Otis Cook...

  • "The Seated Woman" by Albert Andre
    By Albert Andre
    Located in Wiscasset, ME
Framed watercolor by Albert Andre signed lower right. Measures 17" x 15" including frame and 12" x 9" sight. Provenance: Sothebys Andre came to Paris in 1889 as an industrial designer. At the age of 23 he enrolled at the studio of William Bouguereau at the Académie Julian, where he met Ranson, Louis Valtat and the young poet and dramatist Henry Bataille, who at the time was training as a painter. He illustrated L'étang de Berre by Charles Maurras and Les Petites Alliées by Claude Farrère. He produced cartoons for tapestries for the Beauvais factory. In his youth he worked in Paris and Loudun, but later settled in the Midi, where he became curator of the museum in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, building up a major collection of contemporary art, including works by Monet, Renoir, Bonnard, Vuillard, Matisse and Despiau. In 1923, as a friend of Renoir, he compiled his recollections of the painter in a preface to an album of collotypes of his works. He was initially influenced in his painting by Delacroix, and it was Cézanne's paintings that helped him discover how to give the impression of volume using colour: warm tones for illuminated surfaces and cool colours for shadow. But it was undoubtedly Renoir who had the most profound influence on him, especially as it was Renoir who noticed his paintings in 1894 and introduced him to Paul Durand...
