About the Item

Canvas dimensions cm 53.3 x 36.3 He was born in Pordenone on 7 July 1895. He attended the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, studying at Guglielmo Ciardi's school. He participated in the First World War, fighting in the air force, then resumed his studies, again at the Venice Academy, under the guidance of Ettore Tito. Between 1922 and 1925, he was invited to the exhibitions at Ca' Pesaro and also participated in other national exhibitions in Bologna, Turin, Padua, Udine and Livorno during the same years. Before 1930, he moved to Milan, where a publisher had invited him to illustrate Italian landscapes: his painting incorporated 20th century suggestions, linking them to Veneto colour, in simplified and convincing syntheses. He exhibited in Milan and in 1931, at the invitation of Dante Alighieri, in Paris, in the Association's headquarters; he also exhibited in Paris in 1933, at the Charpentier Gallery. He subsequently held solo exhibitions in Rome, Genoa, Milan and other cities, while continuing to participate in regional and national group exhibitions. His favourite theme is landscape painting, which he knows how to realise in limpid tones and fresh colour spreads, always mindful of his original Veneto training. In 1969, the Sagittaria Gallery in Pordenone dedicated an important solo exhibition to him, and in 1991, an extensive retrospective was held in Turin. He died in the Piedmontese city on 25 February 1983. Works by P. can be found in various public collections: Gallery of Modern Art in Genoa, Piacenza, Udine; at the Civic Art Museum in Pordenone; at municipalities (Venice, Milan) and banking institutions in Milan, Rome, Udine (Fondazione CRUP); at the permanent gallery of the Pordenone Cultural Initiatives Centre.
