The Four Saints Early 20th Century Oil On Canvas Convent Painting
About the Item
Early 20th century remake of a piece originally created by Andrea del Sarto in 1528.
The piece in question is a detail from a much larger mural that itself was a remake of the Vallombrosa Altarpiece by Pietro Perugino.
This homage was painted by Sister M. Angelica Dolan (1860 - c. 1940), a nun who formerly resided at the Sinsinawa Mother House (now Sinsinawa Mound Center), a convent in Wisconsin that occupies the grounds of what was once a boarding school. The bottom right corner includes her signature along with notes regarding the piece.
This painting depicts Saints Michael, John Gualbert, John the Baptist, and Bernardo degli Uberti in an unknown landscape during what is believed to be the Ascension of Christ.
The painting is housed in a varnished wooden frame with painted gold trim.
