Framed Watercolor Titled "Quiet Street Corner" Madison, in by Beatrice S. Levy

About the Item

Lovely muted original watercolor painting by Beatrice S. Levy. The handwritten note on the back states it was painted in Madison, IN. It has lovely shades of browns, creams, black, gray and a touch of green. It is framed with a cream color mat surrounding the piece. The paper on the back of the frame is cracking but the frame is in very good condition. Levy studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and won a medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Fransisco in 1915. She was also President of the Chicago Society of Artists and supervisor for several Works Progress (WPA) projects. Her works are on display at the Art Institute in Chicago and the Smithsonian. Her woodblock prints are sought after. This is an early original work. Framed it is 28 1/4"W x 22 3/8H x 3/4" D. The painting itself appears to be approximately 19"W X 14"H (we did not examine it outside the frame).

  • Impressive Mid-Century Still Life Painting by Franz Pricking dated 1955
    By Franz Priking
    Located in Chicago, IL
Stunning still life of fruit by German artist Franz Priking. Painted primarily in shades of gold, deep green and black and housed in a beautiful frame that has gilded accents, this original work of art is a stunner. Signed and dated in the upper right hand corner "Pricking 1955". There is a label on the reverse side from World House Galleries on Madison Ave in NYC. The label states the artist is French (where he resided at the time this work was painted). Priking was born in Germany and was eleven years old when WWII broke out. It is said that the war influenced him and his art for the rest of his life. Immediately after the war he began to show an affinity for the Expressionist art that was banned by the Nazis. Priking was a student of Max Pechstein by 1948 at the Bauhaus, and by 1952 he had moved to southern France, meeting Picasso at Vallauris. Picasso is said to have strongly encouraged him, saying he would become one of the great artists of the century. He exhibited mostly in Europe but also in Tokyo and Sao Paolo. The artist's use of black (prominent in this work) is said to reflect the darkness of his early years during the war. His work moved through various phases, beginning with Fauvism and Cubism, moving through Expressionism and finally on to abstraction in his final decade. In 1958 he was awarded the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, in 1961 he was elected a member of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in Geneva. He died at barely age 50, cutting short a promising career. In 1990 when Ecole de Paris paintings...

  • Robert McChesney Watercolor Titled "Investigators"
    By Robert McChesney
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Impressive watercolor by California Abstract Impressionist, Robert McChesney (1913-2008). The painting is in excellent condition and measures 21 x 15 inches. The frame is 31 x 24. A label is seen on the verso with the title: "Investigators," and "From the Okinawa Series #47." Signed lower right. McChesney was a wonderful painter and this work is from his best period in my opinion. Post-War California artist, Robert Pearson McChesney became an Abstract Expressionist painter, assemblage artist, printmaker, sculptor and teacher. He was born in Marshall, Missouri, and with the exception of a year in Mexico, 1951, and World War II military service aboard a ship, he spent his career in California where he moved in 1936. He lived and had his studio north of San Francisco in Petaluma, atop Sonoma Mountain. Considered one of the "progenitors of Bay Area abstract expressionism", he had influence far beyond his home town. Exhibition venues were in New York at the Whitney Museum, Chicago at the Art Institute and San Francisco at the Museum of Modern Art. He studied at Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, Missouri from 1933-1934, and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1936 to 1937 with Fred...
