Original Painting of Composer Maurice Ravel by Sam Fink

About the Item

Lovely, almost three dimensional painting of Maurice Ravel, the composer, done by Sam Fink. It features a quote by Ravel, "Inspiration is nothing but a reward for daily work.". It seems to show Ravel seated at a desk while working on a score. In the background you see buildings in a village (perhaps Montfort L'Amaury (a place Ravel spent much of his time). Above his head we see a larger than life musical score and floating above that the quote attributed to him. This work has paper on board (the paper is built up in several areas to give the piece its three dimensional quality). It is housed in a shadow box type frame that is 3" deep. The piece measures 22"H x 23"W. We have several of these biographical paintings (that how the artist described them) by Sam Fink. See other listings for similar works that feature J Robert Oppenheimer, Albert Einstein, Hal Borland and James Jones. Sam Fink was an artist, a calligrapher and an illustrator. He was an artist of inimitable range. He learned to hand-letter from his father. He also studied at the National Academy and the Art Students' League. For decades, he worked as an art director at Young & Rubicam and later, he taught at the Pratt Institute. For more than 20 years, Fink educated and entertained adults and children with his illustrated texts of American history. He celebrated his 90th birthday in 2006 with the release of The Constitution of the United States of America which had won a Gold IPPY. He also published The Declaration of Independence: The Words that Made America. Sam died in 2011 at the age of 95.

Impressive Mid-Century Still Life Painting by Franz Pricking dated 1955
By Franz Priking
Located in Chicago, IL
Stunning still life of fruit by German artist Franz Priking. Painted primarily in shades of gold, deep green and black and housed in a beautiful frame that has gilded accents, this original work of art is a stunner. Signed and dated in the upper right hand corner "Pricking 1955". There is a label on the reverse side from World House Galleries on Madison Ave in NYC. The label states the artist is French (where he resided at the time this work was painted). Priking was born in Germany and was eleven years old when WWII broke out. It is said that the war influenced him and his art for the rest of his life. Immediately after the war he began to show an affinity for the Expressionist art that was banned by the Nazis. Priking was a student of Max Pechstein by 1948 at the Bauhaus, and by 1952 he had moved to southern France, meeting Picasso at Vallauris. Picasso is said to have strongly encouraged him, saying he would become one of the great artists of the century. He exhibited mostly in Europe but also in Tokyo and Sao Paolo. The artist's use of black (prominent in this work) is said to reflect the darkness of his early years during the war. His work moved through various phases, beginning with Fauvism and Cubism, moving through Expressionism and finally on to abstraction in his final decade. In 1958 he was awarded the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, in 1961 he was elected a member of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in Geneva. He died at barely age 50, cutting short a promising career. In 1990 when Ecole de Paris paintings...
