About the Artist
Georg August Stahl (b. Kassel, Germany) was a German painter and graphic artist known for his abstract compositions and calligraphic sketches. His early training emphasized drawing and watercolor, later mastering woodcuts at Kassel's Academy of Fine Arts, a key medium in 1920s German Expressionism.
Career Highlights
Emigrated to the Netherlands in 1930, joining avant-garde circles like R33 in Rotterdam.
Hid during WWII to escape persecution, later conscripted, deserted in 1944, and became a POW in England, where he painted and studied.
Returned to the Netherlands post-war, creating monumental abstract works and delicate sketches on Japanese paper.
Exhibited widely, including a 1962 retrospective in Kassel.
