This spectacular mid century abstraction has all the right looks and colors to makes an iconic mid century artistic statement! Orange, white, blues and grays work to create a classic abstract vision!
Kay Johnson was a well traveled artist who joined the "beat" scene in Greenwich village and traveled to Paris where she lived in the "Beat" hotel. She was disillusioned with the art world and was amazed how her expectations of the quality of the people she would meet in the Greenwich Village art scene were shattered.
"I came here to artistic friendship and found only loneliness. It was as if I were out in the Sahara desert. I used to believe that life, love, poets, and painters existed outside of the world, that somewhere out there was this beautiful group of angels. This is the great American myth. I was bitten by the teeth of the grand American illusion. Every man that I meet is a Picasso and artistically speaking I cease to be a virgin. And when I get up near to the clouds, there is no more myth and I realise that everything is real."
Her works are exceedingly rare and as time passed shifted from oils to water color as her preferred medium.
Framed in glass. Signed K. Johnson 70. This work is in very fine vintage condition and displays beautifully.
