About the Item
An absolutely gorgeous and extremely engaging original oil painting by German-born Canadian artist Hand Herold (1925-2011). This work is tiled "Southern Saskatchewan Prairie" and features beautiful, bright, rich spectrum of colors making up the endless blue semi-clouded sky above and red/orange vast earthly landscape below with a small settlement in the far distance. The composition and design are really quite amazing.
The painting is signed and dated (1974) by Herold in the lower right corner and hand titled on the verso.
Herold was known for his evocative landscape paintings. He was born on a farm in Germany in 1925 (though some reports say 1923) and emigrating to Canada in 1957 where he eventually settled in Saskatchewan. His early work focused on the expansive prairies of Saskatchewan, where he developed a distinctive, delicate, and impressionistic approach to depicting the vast skies, fields, and lakes of the region. Herold is known to have had numerous solo and group gallery and museum exhibitions across the United States and Canada, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Todays his work can be found in notable collections throughout Canada such as the Canada Council Art Bank and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
