About the Item

Study for the work on Viborg Cathedral,
Oil on canvas, painted in 1895, signed, dated, framed, dimensions 38.5 x 33 cm
Joakim Skovgaard was the eldest son of the landscape painter and professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, P.C. Skovgaard, and his wife Georgia Maria Luise Schouw (1828-1868), the daughter of Professor Joachim Frederik Schouw, a botanist and politician.
His father was one of the most important painters of Denmark's Golden Age (den danske guldalder) and was a close friend of the poet, philosopher and pastor N.F.S. Grundtvig. In the tradition of his father, Joakim was also taught to paint and draw as a child. Skovgaard attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1871 to 1876, privately supported by the landscape painter Janus la Cour (1837-1909), a friend of the family. In 1878 he made his debut at the Charlottenburg Spring Exhibition (Forårsudstilling) with Faareklipning på Lolland (Sheep Shearing on Lolland). In the winter of 1880/1881 he was in Paris for further studies in the studio of Léon Bonnat and was influenced by Realism during this time.
From 1882 to 1884 he visited Italy. With a large travel grant from the Academy, he was able to travel to Italy and Greece again from 1886 to 1887, accompanied by Kristian Zahrtmann, among others. It was during this time that he finally freed himself from his father's influence and became interested in Symbolism; in Rome he was also influenced by the Impressionist approach to painting of Theodor Philipsen.
From 1884, he experimented with decorative ceramics. He designed ceramics for the workshop of Johan Wallmann (1831-1923) in Utterslev (Copenhagen), where he became acquainted with Thorvald Bindesbøll. His designs later became sculptures, some of which he realized in collaboration with Bindesbøll, including the Bjørnespringvandet (1900) and the Dragespringvandet (1904) at Copenhagen City Hall.
In 1891, Skovgaard was a co-founder of Den Frie Udstilling (Free Exhibition) - a Danish Secession - in protest against the access regulations to the established Charlottenborg Exhibition. From the 1890s onwards, he was mainly involved in the decoration of the cathedral in Viborg, for which he completed the entire fresco and ceiling painting in the following years (see below). One of his last major works was the design of the apse mosaic in Lund Cathedral, Sweden, in 1921-27, with the help of Agnete Varming (1897-1983), Elof Risebye (1892-1961) and Hugo Gehlin (1889-1953). The decoration of two wedding halls in Copenhagen City Hall from 1926 was completed under the direction of his son Johan Thomas.
Viborg Cathedral
A decisive part of Skovgaard's works were religious motifs, such as the paintings Englen rører vandet i Bethesda dam, painted in Rome in 1888, and Kristus fører røveren i Paradiset from 1890, originally conceived for Mandø Church. In 1891-94 he created the monumental painting Kristus i de dødes rige, which caused a sensation with its visionary, symbolic form. These works laid the foundations for the commission to decorate the cathedral church.
In the summers of 1874 and 1875, Skovgaard had assisted Frederik Christian Lund as a student in the decoration of the new building of Viborg Cathedral. It was significant that he came into contact with Bishop Jørgen Swane (1821-1903) and the architect Hermann Baagøe Storck (1839-1922), who oversaw the reconstruction of the church from 1871. As the gray granite walls made the church appear cold, the desire for painted decoration quickly arose.
In 1890, Bishop Jørgen Swane (1821-1903) requested that the interior of the cathedral be redecorated after August Jerndorff (1846-1906) had declined the commission. The designs were completed with H.B. Stork between 1895 and 1897. The impressive frescoes were created in 1901-06, with the help of his assistants Niels Larsen Stevns (1864-1941), Arne Lofthus (1881-1962), Viggo Pedersen (1854-1926) and Povl Jerndorff (1885-1933).
The ceiling paintings in the side aisles were created in collaboration with Thorvald Bindesbøll. Skovgaard produced the oil paintings for the central nave in 1911-13. Skovgaard and Bindesbøll also designed the stained glass windows. Skovgaard also designed eight bronze angels carrying lights in the nave and a glass mosaic with singing angels in the west gable[1] The pictorial program was based on scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The last motif on the north wall of the choir (Christ leading Adam and Eve out of the realm of the dead) was inspired by a song by N.F.S. Grundtvig (Den Danske Salmebog no. 213)

Brendekilde grew up in poor circumstances and began training as a carpenter and stonemason at the age of 14. After a preparatory course of several months in 1877 for the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Oluf August Hermannsen to become a flower painter, he began studying sculpture and later painting at the academy. In 1882 - one year after graduating - he made his debut at the Charlottenborg Autumn Exhibition. Born Hans Andersen, the painter changed his surname to the place name of his native village in 1884 to avoid any confusion with the distantly related Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen. From 1885 to 1907, Brendekilde worked in the pottery of Hermann A. Kähler, producing ceramic and glass sculptures. Although he had been carving picture frames since childhood, it was not until 1888 that he used his own frames for his paintings. Between 1889 and 1890, he embarked on an academy-sponsored study trip to Germany, France, Italy, Egypt, Syria and the Netherlands. A little later, in 1894 - 1895, he traveled to Germany and Italy again. From 1901 to 1904 he worked for the Fyens Glasværk. His last study trips took him to Italy between 1908 - 1909 and 1922 - 1923.
From 1883, he regularly visited the Raagelund art colony, where he met H. P. Carlsen, Søren Lund and Julius Paulsen. From 1903, Brendekilde worked at Holckenhus - a studio association - where he worked together with Peter Severin as well as Marie Krøyer...
