Legacy to South America, he studied painting at the School of Fine Arts of Buenos Aires, under the direction of the distinguished Argentine master Pio Collivadino. Rimsa lived in Bolivia between 1937 and 1950. The highland landscapes, the dairy farms, the faces of the people were captured in his oil paintings that are considered among the most representative of 20th century art in the country. Juan Rimsa, whose legacy is preserved in state museums of Bolivia, municipal museums of La Paz and private collections, he trained in La Paz and Sucre, (between 1944 and 1947) an important group of Bolivian artists who later established themselves as great references, among them the following stand out: Gil Imana, Maria Esther Ballivián, Antonio Mariaca, Enrique Valda del Castillo among others. He received the Condor of the Andes, the highest decoration of the Bolivian Government. At the same time he received Bolivian nationality. The Universidad Mayor Real y Pontificia de San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca granted him the title of Honoris Causa Professor. Died in 1978 in California (USA). (n Lithuania, c. 1900; f Santa Monica, CA, 1975). Lithuanian painter and teacher, active in Bolivia. He arrived in Bolivia in 1937, settling in Sucre and teaching there at the Academy of Fine Arts for three years, after which he opened a Higher Painting Workshop. In 1945 he moved to Potosí, where he also taught some, and in 1947 to La Paz. He left Bolivia in 1950 to live in Mexico, and after a few years there he settled in Santa Monica, CA. Rimsa brought to Bolivia expressionism which was an important style in northern European art at the time. Fascinated by the light, the native peoples and the earthy energy of Bolivia, he adapted his figurative paintings to develop a passionate expressionism, using intense colors with strong brush strokes, often outlined in dark colors to achieve dramatic effects unusual in Bolivia in that period. . His paintings, full of themes, have a characteristic rhythm and expressive movement, as in The Man in Yellow (1938; U. Sucre, Mus. Charcas) and The Foundation of La Paz (1948; La Paz, Alcaldía Mun.) . In 1975 a retrospective of his work was held in the Alcadia of La Paz.
