Large 18th Century French School Painting, The Abduction of Deianeira

Depicting The Abduction of Deianeira by the Centaur Nessus (Ovid, Metamorphoses, IX, 101/34). The Centaur Nessus, half man, half horse, tries to abduct Deianeira, the wife of Heracles or Hercules. Heracles can be seen left in the painting on the other side of the river. He shoots Nessus after hearing Deianeira cry. Nessus is dying. Nessus takes revenge by making Deianeira believe that his blood should be kept en used to regain the love of Heracles when needed. Deianeira uses the blood years later when Heracles fell in love with another women. The blood appeared poisonous and Heracles dies a heroic death. Deianeira kills herself when she realizes what she has done. Zeus brings Heracles to Olympus where he regains his live.
French School, around 1780. This painting is stylistically related to French painters from the last quarter of the
18th century, such as Louis Jean François Lagrenée and Joseph Marie Vien.

- ConditionRepaired: Cleaned and given a new varnish. The work is been relined. There are traces of previous tears in the canvas, lower left and above the Centaur's head, these have been repaired and retouched. Wear consistent with age and use. The painting doesn't need any restoration and can be immediately used. The frame has some minor damages though as shown in the pictures.
