About the Item
A large oil on canvas by extensively exhibited Australian artist, Beverley Downie, a painter whose keen interest in opera has strongly influenced her work.
Downie died in 2022, in Castlemaine, Australia. In the later part of the 1970s she painted a brilliant series of abstract expressionist works based around evocations of classical music. She was an action painter in the style of Willem de Kooning, which is particularly clear in this work with it's vigourous brush strokes and free composition.
Her works are vibrate. They lilt and shimmer, changing with the light over the course of the day. Lovely meditations to live with, these evocations of sound can be light and soothing or darkly stirring. While they’re large in size, they are enveloping rather than overwhelming.
Wonderful work by a wonderful artist, this particular painting is beautifully framed in gilt and stained timber in a 1970s modern style, with a simple box frame that creates a fine shadow line of vacant space around the canvas.
