Large Original Painting of the Madonna and Child, circa 1970s
About the Item
Beautiful oil on panel painting of Madonna with her child by the Belgian painter Julien van Gaubergen.(1921-1984)
Juliaan Van Gaubergen belongs to the select group of excellent painters, such as Pieter Jozef Verhaghen, Maurice Haccuria, Jacques Van Den Seylbergh, Miel Deca, that our old ducal city has produced. He was largely self-taught, but nevertheless he must be counted among the better contemporary painters and graphic artists. Although he had a fairly hard and difficult childhood, as he already had to earn a living as a 16-year-old boy, in his spare time he always remained faithful to his true passion: art.
The young Van Gaubergen carefully attended evening classes at the then drawing academy in Aarschot for several years and we therefore situate his first “expressionist” painting in this period. As part of his growing interest in art history, he undertook several study trips to the “big” museums at home and abroad and thus tried to test his theoretical knowledge against “the real thing”. It is through this constant eagerness to learn and his open mind that he came into contact with modern European grandmasters, such as Paul Cézanne.
Van Gaubergen's introduction to the oeuvre of this founder of Cubism and a later visit to the stained glass windows of Chartres were brought together into a wonderful synthesis in a series of monumental creations with the central theme of the glorification of nature in and through certain saints. The influence of the French master proved so strong that Van Gaubergen himself ventured on a short-lived cubist adventure. However, this shift towards the more abstract, where nature and reality were renounced, could not satisfy him. Nature was a primordial gift for him, which he could not or should not renounce if he did not want to deny himself. After this short period of unfaithfulness to his beloved themes of man and the landscape, he finally developed his own style, which was strongly in line with the Flemish expressionists à la Permeke.
His study trips through Europe also brought him to Italy, the land of classical fine arts, but even the Italian travel impressions could not make him forget the people of Brabant and its hilly landscapes. Around 1963 - 1964 Van Gaubergen finally returned to his roots. The hilly landscape of the Hageland with its open and wide vistas, people in their daily activities, the old crafts and the disappearing expressions of the typical country life of the past, all this was close to his heart.
For him, the historical values were a constant source of inspiration and artistic creativity or, as he liked to put it, his church and his liturgy. In this way he has designed a historical documentation that not only confirms and honors his artistic talent, but will also remain of great importance for the study of the old professions. We would like to agree with a statement by Hugo Verriest who said: “Genius is a diamond that shines always and everywhere. Having talent is like an uncut diamond that can lie in the shadows for a long time, but once it starts to shine, it shines forever.”
