Mid Century Enamel Painting on Copper by C. C. Chu

About the Item

This unique and vibrant enamel painting on copper is of a sailboat in stormy waters. The sky is aglow in bright yellow, ochre, and white mixing with hints of blue and green. The rolling sea is of the same colours but is predominantly green and white with hints of yellow and blue. The sailboat is outlined in black and has a full square sail as it battles the water and wind. Two red brushstrokes on the mid section of the boat create a focal point and sign of success and good fortune. This painting is signed C. C. Chu, likely Charles Chi-Jung Chu. According to Cabrera (2023) in Exploration of Charles Chu, Chu is “a Chinese American artist who was born in Guangzhou, China in 1918 and immigrated to the United States in 1935. He studied art at the Art Students League of New York and went on to have a successful career as a painter, educator, and curator. Chu’s artwork was influenced by the abstract expressionist movement and often incorporated elements of Chinese calligraphy and symbolism” (para. 2). “In addition to his artistic career, Chu was also a respected professor of art at Connecticut College in New London, where he taught for over two decades. Through his teaching and mentorship, Chu inspired and influenced many aspiring artists, leaving a lasting impact on the art world. He was also a curator and art critic, and he helped to promote the work of other Asian American artists” (para. 3).
