Modern School Triptych, Ex. Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason Collection

About the Item

Modern School (20th/21st c.), triptych, one part painted on foil, mounted on wood, the others possibly paper mounted on wood, verso of blocks marked "11" and "1, 2 and 3". Described as "a couple at the centre of the American art world in the second half of the 20th century " by Christie’s American Art specialist Paige Kestenman, Kahn and Mason amassed an extensive art collection. The deep-rooted connection the couple felt with other artists they knew or admired is the defining factor of their remarkable collection of modern and contemporary art. On May 18, 2021 Christie's New York held a sale titled Fields of Vision: The Private Collection of Artists Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason. The sale included works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Richard Diebenkorn and Robert Motherwell, among many others, as well as paintings by Mason and Kahn themselves. Proceeds from the sale will sponsor foundations supporting the next generation of artists. Kahn taught at Berkeley and at The Cooper Union and many of their acquisitions were made as a means of "supporting their studio assistants, [their students] and their younger friends," says Kestenman. They relied on their own taste, often collecting works before critics had had a chance to catch up with what they had seen.
