About the Item
This 1955 painting by Dutch artist Pierre Hubert (Piet) Schoenmakers (1919–2009) marks his pivotal transition into abstract art. Dominated by geometric red and blue forms against a muted gray and black background, the work reflects Schoenmakers’ mastery of modernist abstraction. Bold colors and overlapping shapes create dynamic contrasts, suggesting a thoughtful exploration of spatial depth and structure. Born in Swalmen, Schoenmakers studied at the Teekenschool in Roermond and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, winning the Prix de Rome in 1941 for his engraving *Odysseus Lost in Thought on the Island of the Nymph Kalypso*. His career spanned sculpture, ceramics, glass, and painting, including notable public artworks during post-war reconstruction. Retiring to focus on abstract painting, his first exhibition was held at the Stedelijk Museum Roermond (now Cuypershuis) in 1984. This painting exemplifies Schoenmakers’ innovative spirit, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in Dutch modern art.
