About the Item

An impressionist painting of a horse race by a founding member of the New Hope Group of painters, Morgan Colt. Colt was a member of the gun making family and was also known as a metalworker in the arts and crafts style of the early 20th century. He specialized in ornamental garden furniture and fire screens and was also a trained architect. This vibrant oil on panel depicts a foreground of seeming calm in the moments after the racing throng has sped past into the back stretch. The work is unusually active for him and was painted at the York, PA state fair in the 1920s. Measures 12” x 9.25” as framed, panel measures 8.5” x 6”. Signature is faint but clear: last photo is an extreme close up, enhanced to provide better contrast.
