About the Item

High mountain flowers - Amelia Da Forno Casonato 52 x 60 - frame excluded 66 x 73 - with frame oil on panel - 1940s Painting depicting a bouquet of high mountain flowers. On the reverse the title of the work on applied paper bearing the wording "poligraphic Cortina". This painting is therefore part of the works created by the author during the period in which she lived in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Amelia Da Forno Casonato (Nervesa della Battaglia 1878 – Conegliano Veneto 1969) worked as a skilled painter for over 40 years in Egypt, where she founded an art school in Cairo. Her pictorial subjects are figurative, preferring plants and flowers. Amelia Da Forno, as a young woman, moved with her family to Belluno to manage a hotel. Subsequently, having obtained her high school diploma, her innate artistic talents led her to study in Venice at the Academy of Fine Arts. Giuseppe Ciardi and Ettore Tito are also among her professors. In the lagoon city there is an overwhelming love with Diego Casonato so as to push the two young people to marry secretly from their respective parents. As a result of this, in 1902 they decide to flee to Egypt. A new life is created by working for the Pashas and for King Fouad, father of the then Prince Farouk, designing the furnishings for their palaces. Her husband becomes an official of Banca Italo Egiziana in the capital and Amelia then decides to found the first art school in the city of Cairo. In her aticism Amelia Casonato Da Forno participates in three editions of the Venice Biennale in the Egyptian Pavilion. She then she exhibits in London, Brussels, Genoa, Rome, Venice (Opera Bevilacqua La Masa) and annually in her Egypt in the cities of El Cairo and Alexandria. At the age of 52, her husband Diego died and with the outbreak of the Second World War she, Amelia, left Egypt for Italy on the last ship available (the Galileo). During World War II you moved to Conegliano and then to Cortina d'Ampezzo. After the war she returns to Egypt and continues her artistic activity. In Venice in 1948 she meets Sir Winston Churchill not as a politician and victor but as a charming English watercolourist. Amelia gives him a watercolor with his flowers. In the brief encounter with Churchill, Amelia is introduced to the industrialist Giovanni Battista Meneghini who accompanied a very young Maria Callas, about to make her debut at the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice. In 1952 she decided to settle in Conegliano Veneto, bonding in friendship with the Fabris family. Until her death on November 2, 1969, she continued her pictorial activity with exhibitions in Italy.
