About the Item
Painted during the heyday of American Surrealism, this watercolor depicts a sleeping nude female figure holding a laurel wreath, seemingly disconnected from a pair of male nudes sauntering off into the distance, as if walking along the beach. All three figures, mysteriously, are wearing pointed hats like those worn by a wizard or witch. The painter, Robert Lohman, was one of the Midwest's finest and most prolific artists, creating sculptures, paintings, and ceramic works that are increasingly collected today. He worked with renowned sculptor Carl Milles in the 1940s, and at the end of the decade became the Director of Fine Arts for the Cranbrook Academy in suburban Detroit.
