About the Item

Oil on canvas. Giltwood frame. Representing a young couple harvesting cherries and dressed in the 18th century style. French work signed Théodore LEVIGNE, Late 19th century. Théodore Levigne is a French painter, born November 17, 1848 in Noirétable and died in Lyon November 11, 1912 at the Hotel-Dieu. At the age of 6, Theodore tries to reproduce the stained glasses of his native village’s church. His family moved to Lyon in 1856 in the Saint-Jean district where his father opened a bootmaker shop. He learns with Jean-Pierre Lays, who was a specialist in floral painting, a fashionable activity in Lyon due to the work of the famous silk weavers, but also Joseph Guichard and Michel Genod. 10 years old, he joins the national superior school of fine arts in Lyon from 1858 to 1862. At 15, he receives the first prize for painting and he’s praised by the school's director who says about him: "the history of art doesn’t offer previous work as distinguished as regard to the age of the young artist who has just 15 years". Then, he works engraving. With a pension of 1,500 francs offered by the City of Lyon to continue learning his trade, he exhibits at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1865 and lives in the 6th district. Here, he studies with two very famous painters: Alexandre Cabanel and Jean Léon Gérôme. He is 22 when the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 begins. Wounded in the left hand, he doesn’t stop to paint and several months works with the pallet attached to her arm, because the painting is a vital need for him. Volunteer in the Rhône’s legion, he draws everything, including the fighting. The artist's productions have few links with the teaching of his masters. Having a photographic eye, the pupil becomes the champion of the genre scene, both urban and rural; then he is a great specialist in realistic painting and unadorned restores scenes of ordinary life and humble tasks of peasants. He also likes the genre scenes of eighteenth century style. The obituary of the Lyon Republican November 12, 1912 sums up the place that has made the artist by writing that "he painted thousands and thousands of paintings with a carefree of his reputation unmatched. Can we deny him the title of artist to have made so many pictures? We shouldn’t, because before to become the slave or rather the victim of the struggle for life, Lévigne signed works not without merit. With a Grazing in the Charollais he earned a gold medal at the Paris’s salon in 1885, and similar award was given to him by his peers in 1899 in Lyon, where he exhibited a picturesque prom’s output. [...] For the painter, death is sometimes the beginning of celebrity but this aphorism doesn’t seems to apply to Th. Lévigne. But later, some of his paintings, the most rare alas! Will perhaps like the good beaujolais he loved so much: they will take value that it wouldn’t be surprising." The painting that we present is part of this realistic line of a genre scene in the 18th century French style. The artist successfully represent the charming moment of a young couple picking cherries. Colors are bright and the artist paintbrusch is vibrating. It animates the canvas and the romantic moment between this two people.
