Headline: Original Oil Canvas Painting After LOUISE ELIZABETH VIGEE LE BRUN C 1840 Self Portrait St Luca Rome Italy Marie Antoinette French School Revolutionary Woman Artist Ornate Period Gilt Wood Frame 19th Century Art Details: This highly skilled original oil on canvas painting dating from circa 1840 is after a self-portrait by Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, one of the finest painters of Revolutionary France and one of the most important woman artists in all of art history. The original portrait is known as the St. Luca Self Portrait of 1790 and was painted shortly after her exile from France because of her association with Marie Antoinette and her subsequent admission to the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. A similar unsigned 19th century copy of this celebrated portrait was in the collection of the Marquis and Marquise de Ravenel and was sold by Christie's for $16,000 in 2007 (Sale 7464, Lot 231). Another is located in the Museum of Fine Art in Verviers, Belgium. The painting, measuring approx. 18"x23" is stretched on period handmade stretchers and presented in an ornate period gilt frame measuring approx. 25"x32" and 4" in depth. Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755–1842) is one of the finest 18th-century French painters and among the most important of all women artists. An autodidact with exceptional skills as a portraitist, she achieved success in France and Europe during one of the most eventful, turbulent periods in European history. In 1776, she married the leading art dealer in Paris; his profession at first kept her from being accepted into the prestigious Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Nevertheless, through the intervention of Marie Antoinette, she was admitted at the age of 28 in 1783, becoming one of only four women members. Obliged to flee France in 1789 because of her association with the queen, she traveled to Italy, where in 1790 she was elected to membership in the Accademia di San Luca, Rome. Independently, she worked in Florence, Naples, Vienna, St. Petersburg, and Berlin before returning to France, taking sittings from, among others, members of the royal families of Naples, Russia, and Prussia. While in exile, she exhibited at the Paris Salons. She was remarkable not only for her technical gifts but for her understanding of and sympathy with her sitters.
