French Antique Franco-Prussian War Painting of Cuirassiers by Paul Perboyre
Located in Shippensburg, PA
PAUL EMILE LÉON PERBOYRE French, 1851-1929 Cuirassiers Sharing Wine with Rural Countryman Oil on canvas signed lower left "Perboyre" Item # 309ULM18A A rich historical painting that captures the heart and reality of the Franco-Prussian conflict, the scene depicts a troop of Cuirassiers stopping for the afternoon in a non-descript field in the French countryside. Presumably the owner of the field, an older man has come out in the heat of the afternoon to greet the soldiers with a basket of wine bottles, offering a glass to the officers while chatting casually with them. Perhaps he is a local guide offering a sense of what the soldiers might expect in the rural countryside, but more likely it is simply a moment of reprieve in the idyllic countryside and a distinct juxtaposition to the intensity and drama of Perboyre's battle scenes. The Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) was the last use of "cuirassiers" in the French army with uniforms characterized by the distinct helmets known as a "casque à crinière" featuring a plume of horsehair. The cuirassiers wore a breastplate (cuirass) and the red trousers were a standard part of the French military uniform...

“Young Naval Conscript” Antique French Painting by Julien Le Blant
Located in Shippensburg, PA
JULIEN LE BLANT French, 1851-1936 "Le Départ des Conscrits" (1888) Oil on canvas Signed lower left "J. Le Blant" Item # 301OIV16Z A moving study of a very young man hugging and kissing his father goodbye as the French Navy has arrived at his home to collect him for conscription to military service. His mother grips a hankerchief in one hand as she watches her teenage son with a complex expression that bridges grief and perhaps anger. His younger brother likely does not grasp the totality of the situation, dragging behind his feet a toy boat. The bright colors and vibrant life of the rural farm is juxtaposed against a deep sorrow. The present example dates from 1888 and was mentioned in the Gazette anecdotique et Littéraire of the same year. It is included in the ongoing catalogue research project on the works of Julien Le Blant by Dominique Formaz and is documented at Leblant. com JULIEN LE BLANT Julien Le Blant studied under E. Girard and made his debut at Salon in 1874. His work was regularly recognized, ultimately receiving the gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. He was made Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1885. The body of his work largely focuses on military scenes, particularly of the French Revolution, but also scenes of the First World War later in life. He completed hundreds of illustrations for a great number of books, including Les Chouans (Honoré de Balzac), Chevalier des Touches (Barbey d'Aurevilly), and Premier Grenadier de France (Paul Dérouléde) to name a few. His work is held in major museum collections and institutions around the world. For serious collectors of militarism and of the Romantic painters of the period, this is a simply outstanding investment grade selection. Works by Julien Le Blant very rarely make their way to the the open market. Museums: Musée de Mulhouse, France - The Regiment's Return Musée de Nantes, France - Death of General d'Elbee Musée de Troyes, France - The Battle of Fére Champenoise Further Reading and Notes: E. 'Les Quatre Eléments' by Pierre Victor Galland
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
Pierre-Victor GALLAND (1822-1892) ‘Les Quatre Eléments’ Four, oil on canvas. France, Circa 1873. Each painting depicting one of the cardinal elements personified as a female figure in the presence of its most evident attribute. Painted with strong light and colour. Earth panel depicts one of the four elements in a compelling fashion with an ascendent female figure robed in flowing drapery with foot and arm extended reaching skyward: each with attendant putti below. Earth is shown swathed in robes of greens and white, with a fanciful foliate headdress of lush leaves and bullrushes. Air leaps effortlessly into the sky draped in blush pink and holding a slender fruiting bough. Fire ascends dramatically into the sky holding forth a flaming torch and draped in bright burnished orange and grey, her image seemingly lit from a fire kindled below by an ignipotent putto. Water suitably draped in billowing azure blue with a translucent undergarment, holds aloft a bubble representing water is portrayed with shimmering translucent wings, an attendant winged putto pulling at her hem. Under the Second Empire, Haussmann’s transformation of Paris went hand in hand with the construction of luxurious mansions for the new haute bourgeois. Gallards extensive work for wealthy patrons such as Lionel de Rothschild and Edouard André, led him to become one of Paris’s most admired and sought-after decorative artists. His fame quickly spread and led him to carry out projects outside the capital for, among others, Baron von Derwies in Nice, Prince Narischkine in Saint Petersburg and William Vanderbilt in the United States. Literature Pierre-Victor Galland, Un Tiepolo français au XIXe siècle. Published in 2006, Somogy, Piscine-musée d'art et d'industrie André Diligent, Musée départemental de l'Oise (Paris, Roubaix, Beauvais). ISBN 978-2-7572-0027-8. (in French) Materials Oil on Canvas Provenance Acquired in France with four other panels (The Four Seasons), at the end of the 19th century by Herman Ossian Armour (1837-1901), businessman, and founder of the Armour Meat Company and American humanist. He brought them back to his USA residence at Fifth Avenue, New York Bequeathed to Mary Armour...

Antique Limoges Enamel Portrait of Woman and Lap Dog
Located in London, GB
The beautiful enamel plaque was crafted in Limoges, a town in northern France. Limoges has long been associated with the production of high quality enamel wares. While to begin with, in the 12th Century, the town was famous for its applied enamel pieces, religious icons, for example, which were crafted in metal with champlevé enamel ornament, Limoges later, in the 15th century, began to paint onto enamel, creating plaques, plates and ewers, which were both religious and secular in character. These local techniques were revived in the mid-19th century, when items like this enamel portrait painting were produced. This enamel portrait is a half-length depiction of a young woman. While her body is faced slightly to the side, she turns her head to look out directly at the viewer. The woman wears a fine, light pink gown...

Both plaques depict bust-length portraits of men, shown in three-quarter profile with laurel wreaths adorning their heads. They are both painted in a style that evokes the portraiture of the 16th century, with great care taken to render the details of each sitter’s face, and expressive brushstrokes for the background and clothing. The younger of the men wears a deep orange shirt...
