About the Item
Original watercolor on board painting entitled "Diamond Head 1893", circa 1930s. The piece is in very good antique condition and measures 16.75" x 12.75". #2493
The piece came from the estate of a gentleman named Dr. Roger Dustin Mermod ("Poppy") who was born in Switzerland in 1888. Per the book, "Men of Hawaii", which is a biographical reference library, "complete and authentic, of men of note and substantial achievement in the Hawaiian Islands", Mermod came to Honolulu in 1917 to work at the Queen's Hospital as a physician and surgeon, eventually becoming Chief of Surgery. (Queen's Hosp., Honolulu, 1917-19; phys. and surg. Oahu Sug. Co., Waipahu, Oahu, Oct., 1919. to date. Member Med. Society of Hawaii, University Club).
Per the documentation on the back of the painting preserved by his grandson, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Mermod pulled some strings and got into the Navy, eventually escalating to become one of the senior medical officers in the 7th Fleet and achieving the rank of captain!
This gorgeous painting has great provenance and a wonderful story from an extraordinary man from the "greatest generation"!

Alfred Dupont was a muralist, illustrator and painter who made his home in southern California.
Dupont was born in East Orange, New Jersey. While still a teenager he ran away from home ending up in San Francisco, California. He studied art at the California School of Fine Arts, the University of California and the California College of Arts and Crafts.
Alfred Dupont painted murals on the ceiling of Hearst Castle (active at Hearst Castle in 1933 where he designed the story of the Old Testament on the ceiling of the celestial suite and made the drawings for ornamental ironwork and the blue and gold mosaic tiles around the swimming pool) and for the Golden Gate Exposition of 1939 he painted murals in the mining building.
While in the Navy during World War II he worked as an illustrator and painted portraits of Admirals Nimitz...
