Ortiz De Zarate Manuel (1887-1946) "Vase of flowers" / "Vase de fleurs" Oil on canvas, signed lower right Dimensions of the canvas : 65 x 54 cm Dimensions with its frame : 83 x 71 cm Artist exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Chile (Self-portrait; Notre-Dame de Paris), at the Pinacoteca of the University of Concepcion (Chile), at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Santiago - Chile). >> Manuel Ortiz De Zarate (1887-1946) Manuel Ortiz De Zarate was born on the shores of Lake Como in Italian Lombardy on October 9, 1887. Son of the Chilean composer Eleodoro Ortiz de Zárate, the family moved to Chile in 1891. At the age of 6, he lost his mother and was left alone with his father and older brother Julio (who also became a painter and joined the first Chilean artists' collective "La Generación de los Thirteen"). He would go on to have an important pictorial career in Chile). At the age of 14, Manuel received his first painting lessons from Pedro Lira Rencoret (1845-1912) before joining the School of Fine Arts in Santiago de Chile. Adventurous, he left for Europe in 1902. He continued his artistic training in Italy, in Rome and then in Venice where he met Amedeo Modigliani with whom he became friends. In 1906, he left Italy to join Paris and the Montparnasse district where artistic activity was fertile. He joined the buzzing artists' quarter of La Ruche in the 15th arrondissement, meeting Modigliani and other great artists such as Picasso, Max Jacob, Jean Cocteau, Derain, Apollinaire and Braque. He then settled permanently in France and even adopted French nationality. At the end of the Second World War, he emigrated to the United States where he died on October 28, 1946 in Los Angeles. His colorful, rich and varied works are still exhibited today in various museums, mainly in Chile.
