About the Item

Oil painting on canvas, copy after Eugène Lepoittevin: Return from fishing in Étretat, Normandy, circa 1920. This seascape depicts fishermen busy at work on their boats in the foreground, one of which carries a mother and her child. In the background, we can see the cliffs of Étretat and, in the distance, a sailing ship under a blue and cloudy Normandy sky. Wooden frame in patinated gray. Unsigned painting (Anonymous). --- Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870) was a French painter, lithographer, and caricaturist from Paris. His favorite artistic genre was marine painting. His scenes were inspired by those of the painter Eugène Isabey (1803-1886), who introduced him to Étretat in Normandy and Dutch painting. His works are now on display in many museums in France and abroad. The sign for the Hôtel Blanquet. Eugène Lepoittevin painted the famous sign in 1842 that adorned the Hôtel Blanquet, where many artists of the time stayed, including the painter Claude Monet, who was a regular guest. This sign is now kept at the Les Pêcheries museum in Fécamp, Normandy. --- Dimensions : With frame: 58.5 x 80.5 cm / 23.03 x 31.69 in. Without frame: 53 x 75 cm / 20.86 x 29.52 in.
