About the Item

A striking and wonderfully detailed pair of Italian 17th century Oil on Canvas paintings, by Claude Lorrain. These wonderful paintings are set within rectangular Giltwood frames with an inner berried foliate band and mottled outer edges. Each painting depicts a classical landscape of ruins with the Athenian Acropolis in the background. The left painting displays an impressive altar to 'Athena of Velletri' with classical figures paying tribute aside a smoldering urn. Athena's companion Hermes can be seen flying above the crowds of people and overseeing the occasion. The painting to the right displays a classical ruin with the Acropolis in the distance. The Bill of Sale located on the back of the painting is what makes this pair of painting so unique and desirable. This wonderful pair of paintings was sold to The Duke of Orleans on July 19th, 1809. The description the seller lists on the Bill of Sale states that these paintings were done by Claude Lorrain for Cardinal Bentivoglio in 1629 in Rome and they remained in the Cardinal's family until 1782. Wonderful subject matter and attention to detail throughout. Claude Lorrain (1600–1682), born Claude Gellée, was a French Baroque painter renowned for his idealized landscapes bathed in golden light. Based in Rome for most of his career, he elevated landscape painting to a poetic art form, blending classical themes with masterful depictions of atmosphere and nature. His works were prized by European nobility and recorded in his personal “Liber Veritatis” to ensure authenticity. Today, Lorrain is celebrated as a pioneer of Western landscape art, with masterpieces housed in major institutions like the Louvre and the National Gallery.
