About the Item

This is an incredibly attractive pair of works by Walter Heath Williams of London. Born in 1836, Walter Heath Williams developed a rather distinctive style and space for his genre landscape paintings over the course of his career. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1845-1867 and was generally active in London until around 1876. With a tendency and preference for a canvas of 18" x 26", Williams regularly painted pairs of scenes that complimented one another either panoramically or in terms of perspective. The present pair are no exception, each being a perfectly captured scene of Harvesters at work in a field of wheat beside running water. Bright and vibrant, the colors of each work are just so striking and nostalgic, the nearly cloudless sky shaded by groves of trees in the forefront while the laborers clear the field. Both are signed in the lower left/right corners respectively, the back of the stretcher retaining a label from the Parker Gallery in London. They are an absolutely exquisite pair of landscape paintings for any collector passionate about British genre scenes of the 19th Century. References and Further Reading: E. XIV p. 936-37 Measurements: [frame] 30" x 21 3/4"; [canvas] 26" x 18" Condition Report: [SCENE 1: PATH ON RIGHT] Crackle to paint in upper right corner, this being slightly delicate; under UV examination there are touchups along the edges, particularly the upper edge and scattered in the sky; inpainting at edge of field in lower left quadrant; milky green cast of varnish makes the right side too murky to examine thoroughly under UV. [SCENE 2, PATH ON LEFT] Paint fleck losses among haystacks and other very tiny paint fleck losses; under UV examination there are touch ups in tree leaves, inpainting to grove of trees on right side, old repairs above signature and in foliage and tree on left side, other scattered minor restorations. [OVERALL] Both paintings are simply gorgeous and are presentation ready exactly how they are - they would benefit from being cleaned again eventually as there is a light yellowing and grime to the surface, but it is not imperative to do so quite yet as they remain vibrant and bright. We can certainly have them conserved upon request - contact us prior to purchasing for a quote and estimate on timing if this is important to you. Both paintings were restored in the last decade or so, at which point they were relined. Both frames are in overall excellent condition, both probably original or at least quite close to the date of being painted; both frames have cracking and some regilding.
