He is the author of more than 150 songs, including the famous Le Tourbillon, sung by Jeanne Moreau in the film Jules and Jim, as well as J'ai la mémoire qui flanche also performed by Moreau (he signed these songs under pseudonym Cyrus Bassiak, which means "barefoot" in Russian). More than 700 canvases, numerous gouaches, drawings, charcoals, and inks resulted from the “meteoric” trajectory of the artist’s nine creative years. It was an intense rhythm of creation, imprinted with an urgency, in unison with the forces at work in the universe as he himself said: " I feel that my work is not so solitary as it appears, that in fact it tends toward rejoining a universal rhythm whose laws govern the growth of plants and the course of the stars." During Chapoval’s tragically brief artistic career he had already become a much-celebrated exponent of post-war abstraction. Having arrived in Paris in 1924 from the Ukraine, Chapoval went on to study painting under the tuition of Fenosa and attended the Academie de la Grand Chaumière, before working at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, and then at Toulouse during the war. Returning to Paris in 1947, he held his first one-man exhibition at the prestigious Galerie Jeanne Bucher, which was to establish himself as one of the most respected young painters of the new Jeune École de Paris, and was awarded the accolade of the Prix de la Jeune Peinture.
