About the Item

Federico Maldarelli (Napoli 1826 - Napoli 1893) Pompeian interior Signed on the frame on the back: Maldarelli Federico Maldarelli had the first rudiments of art from his father Gennaro, a Neapolitan painter, and later he was a pupil of Costanzo Angelini, a neoclassical painter, through which he was able to participate from an early age in the Bourbon art exhibitions, where already in 1839 he presented the picture Testa della Virgin. Among his first paintings there is also a canvas depicting Jesus in the house of Martha and Mary, preserved in the Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Caserta and bought by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon, at the Bourbon Biennale of 1848, when Frederick was still student at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts (Academy of Fine Arts of Naples). He also dedicated himself to teaching drawing, as a substitute teacher for his father Gennaro at the elementary school of the artisans of Naples and taking his place in his death in 1858. In 1855, with the painting Santa Gliceria he converts and baptizes his jailer, he obtained the third gold medal. In 1861 he was present at the National Exhibition in Florence, with the work The widow of the volunteer demonstrating his adherence to liberal and national ideals, even though his major clients had been the Bourbons of Naples. In 1862 he participated in the exhibition of the Promoter of Fine Arts Society of Naples and also in several of the subsequent editions, exhibiting on those occasions the paintings: The reading of stealth, Poppea and Saint Elizabeth Queen of Hungary. In 1867 he participated in the Universal Exposition in Paris and in 1880 in the Salon, with two small paintings - Bath and Assumption - which made him known and appreciated also on the English and German markets, where his works were requested by collectors rather than by homeland, where verism was affirmed, promoted by his friend and contemporary Domenico Morelli. The success achieved in Rochester in 1878, at the Rundel Gallery, of the paintings Il Pompei Pompeian and the Vestal Virgin are proof of this. Federico Maldarelli also created sculptures, starting in 1878. The measurement shown is of the painting without frame. Italian Fine Arts Authority must check this item in order to allow its exportation. This process lasts about 60 days.
