About the Item
This oil on cardboard is attributed to Joseph-Thomas Chautard, and was supposedly 1840.
Chautard was born in 1821, in Avignon, and died in Paris in 1887. Some of his work was showcased during the Paris Salon Exhibitions of 1867 and 1868.
This painting represents an elderly man with a greying beard. He is seen three quarters. The shades are dark, mostly composed with brown and grey hues.
The framework, which didn't go through any restorations, appears slightly worn.
The painting is signed on the back, and a portrait study, drawn with a pencil, comes with the signature. Those elements are accompanied by a piece of paper, giving a few details about the painted portrait (date, place, and artist) as well as the drawn one ("study-model").
