Depicting the myth of Byblis (Biblis) from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Book IX, this painting shows the heroine at the moment of abandonment and exhaustion, her endless tears about to transform her into a spring. The model’s porcelain tonality and the gentle sfumato transitions in flesh are hallmarks of late nineteenth-century French academic practice in the wake of Bouguereau and Jules Lefebvre. Set against a dark, vaporous ground with quietly modulated greens, the figure’s horizontal pose and drooping arm reinforce the subject’s pathos while creating a graceful arabesque within the rectangle.
Technically, the work displays smooth, layered handling in the flesh passages, feathered treatment of the hair, and restrained, nearly tonalist modulation in the background. The composition’s sobriety and mythological theme align with Paris Salon taste in the 1890s, and the period plaque explicitly records exhibition at the Salon of 1898. The signature—clearly reading “Poujol 1898”—employs a decorative initial P that is sometimes misread as R, hence occasional confusion with “Roujol.”
