About the Item
Oil on academy board portrait of the extreme clipper, Red Jacket. The ship was designed by Samuel Pook and launched from Rockland, Maine in 1853, and named for the Seneca Chief of the Wolf Clan, “Red Jacket”. In its first crossing of the Atlantic it held the record for the New York to Liverpool run. The ship was later fitted in Liverpool for the England to Australia immigrant passage. The painting is signed and the subject identified by the artist, John Arnold. Arnold lived and worked in Maryland and was known for his oil paintings of marine subjects, particularly his portraits of historic sailing ships.
