About the Item
GENIS René (1922-2004) untitled, landscape view of the Eiffel Tower from my window. Oil on hardboard, signed lower right. Dimensions: 65x46 cm - Frame: 76.5x58 cm (30.125x52.8 in). Perfect condition.
A superb painting by the French painter René Génis, a specialist in still life and landscapes, his art demonstrates an ease and rigor of drawing, drawing on the talent of a colorist who asserts himself with delicacy and elegance. The density of contrasts is enhanced by a certain simplification of forms and a flattening of pure colors where light shines.
In 1950, René Génis obtained his first painting diploma (Albert Marquet class) in the studio of Marcel Gromaire (1892-1961). He assisted Jean Lurçat for a time in the creation of his tapestry cartoons.
René Génis was a member of the Paris Salon d'Automne. He soon achieved international renown, and his paintings were exhibited in galleries in New York, Tokyo, Essen, Lausanne, Geneva, and Taipei. His works are now held in numerous museums, both French and foreign.
René Genis was influenced by the Poetic Reality group, which included Christian Caillard, Jules Cavaillès, Raymond Legueult, Roger Limouse, Roland Oudot, and André Planson. The Swiss painter Andry acknowledges his influence.

René Genis
René Genis was born on July 26, 1922 in Hué, Annam, French Indonesia (Vietnam). Genis went with his family to Gironde, Arcachon in Bordeaux, France in 1931. Starting in 1940 he studied for five years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, which won him a four year scholarship to the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris with Albert Marquet and Marcel Gromaire. He exhibited at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture and participated in group shows throughout France. He had his first one-man show at Galerie Charpentier in Paris in 1956. A painter, printmaker and illustrator, Genis taught at the College de Pontoise. From that time, Genis exhibited his paintings at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture, and he received the prize in 1960. For forty years, he exhibited regularly at the Salon Comparaisons in the group of Maurice Boitel. He was also a member of the Society of French Painters-Engravers. Genis is famous with his elegant still-life painting. No matter if the theme is Oriental scenery or French countryside, he always keeps a very poetry serenely ambience. With other artists like Guy Bardone, André Brasilier, Bernard Cathelin, and Paul Guiramand, Genis is also one of the important members of the Parisian Neo-Figurative School. His work has been collected by Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris, National Library of Paris, Fine Arts Museum of Lyon, Yamagata Museum of Art etc. René Genis was influenced by the group of poetic realists with Christian Caillard, Jules Cavaillès, Raymond Legueult, Roger Limouse, Roland Oudot, André Planson, etc. The Swiss painter Andry acknowledges being influenced by him. Jean-Emile Buland was born in Paris in 1857 into a family of artists. His father, Jean-Marie Buland (1825-1895), was an engraver and his brother, Jean-Eugène (1852-1926), was a painter. Jean-Emile Buland studied under the painter Alexandre Cabanel and the engraver Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. He won the 1st Grand Prix de Rome for engraving in 1880. He received a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and a first-class medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1901.
Antoine Calbet, born August 16, 1860 in Engayrac (Lot-et-Garonne) and died August 21, 1942 in Paris, was a French painter, watercolorist, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier by Édouard-Antoine Marsal (1845-1929), where he learned drawing, this draftsman and illustrator, a painter of nudes and romantic scenes, was sought after during his lifetime. He was then admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). He was a member of the Fine Arts admissions jury from 1913 to 1930. He began exhibiting in 1880 and became a member of the Society of French Artists. He was a friend of French President Armand Fallières.
He received several medals at the Salon des Artistes Français and a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition for his work on a panel for the pavilion of the Ministry of Colonies.
The French Society of Friends of the Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E.
