Robert Heitz Oil Painting Allegorical

About the Item

Oil painting on art board by the French artist Robert Heitz, of two men, one on horseback, walking through a landscape with ancient ruins, painting is from a Palm Beach estate. Robert Heitz was born in Saverne, France August 1895 and died in Strasbourg, France November 1984. He was a painter, author, art critic, member of the French resistance and held political offices. Heitz was close to the 'Groupe de Mai’ formed in 1919 by Alsatian painters and in 1924 was a founding member of ‘le Groupe des 5’ which the next year became 'le Groupe des 4’ and in following years was placed under the emblem of 'Groupe de la Barque’ which exhibited in Paris at the Gallery Bernheim-Jeune in 1930. Robert Heitz was an important figure in the history of Alsatian artists. There are three books devoted to his artwork, in 1995 a Strasbourg square was dedicated to his name, a street in Wolfisheim bears his name, a gallery at the Strasbourg Museum of Fine Arts is named after him and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg has an extensive collection of his work.
