"Ruin Landscape" ("Capriccio"), Oil on Canvas, Possibly Circle of Panini

About the Item

Capriccio. Possibly circle of Panini, Giovanni Paolo (Italy, 1691-1765). A series of classical ruins of Ancient Rome (or inspired by it) have been harmoniously located under a blue sky with clouds. The columns and entablatures on the left (with more elements in the background) create a group that can be compared in size to the building on the right (Pantheon in Rome), the ruins with trees in front of it and the sculpture, giving harmony to the painting (background, a series of arches visually unite both groups) this way. This studied composition is completed with a series of human figures in the first plane and dressed in "the old way", among which stands out a man wearing armour and mantle. When comparing the present piece with others of its environment and style, one realizes that this masculine figure with classicist armour may be Alexander the Great, historical figure a bit frequent in these paintings. It is also possible to identify ruins and buildings: Pantheon of Rome or of Agrippa (erected by Adriano between 118 and 125 AD, and dedicated to all the gods), ruins that can be inspired by the Forum of Rome, a sculpture that could be the one known as the "Gladiator of the Villa Borghese" (related to the sculptor Agasias I or Agasio of Ephesus; the sculpture was discovered in the time of Pope Paul V-born Camilo Borghese-Pontiff of Rome between 1605 and 1621, and incorporated into the Borghese Collection of Rome; later, it was sold to Napoleon in 1807, and is located in the Louvre Museum of Paris nowadays; the sculpture was formerly known as "Hoplitódromo"), the large marble vase on the left recalls outstanding works such as the Medici Vase or the Borghese Vase, etc. Giovanni Paolo Panini or Pannini was a very active painter and architect in Rome who was known, above all, for his "vedute" starring elements of Roman antiquity. Despite a striking attention to detail in the ruins and ancient pieces that it showed, its landscape compositions used to be embellished ideal compositions, more "caprices or architectural fantasies" than real views. Because of the quality of his work and the popularity of these Roman sights with ruins and ancient elements, he was a painter with outstanding apprentices and whose style influenced other "vedutistas" (Antonio Joli, Canaletto, Bernardo Bellotto, Marlow, etc.). Compare the present painting with "Ruins of Ancient Rome" (1725-1750, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon, Portugal), "Roman Capriccio: The Pantheon and Other Monuments" (1735, Indianapolis Museum of Art), "A Capriccio of the Roman Forum "(1741, Yale University Art Gallery), etc. Size: 125 x 99 cms.
