A marvelous example of Romanesque-Medieval bas relief sculpture interpreted by an American artist in the 1920s, this painting on fabric was executed by Dunbar Beck, the famous muralist. The painting, on one length of cloth, is in two parts -- one portion depicts a bull being attached by a lion, the other depicts a scrolling rope motif. According to a notation on the reverse, both paintings were done for a production of "Oedipus Rex," perhaps in California. Beck was an important muralist at this time, executing a mural for the US Post Office...
