Set of Four 19th Century Framed Oil on Canvas Hunt Paintings Signed E. Godchaux
About the Item
Decorate a study, a hunting lodge or a man's office with this exceptional suite of antique paintings. Crafted in France circa 1890 and set in the original oak wood frame with gilt wood bands from later addition, each artwork depicts a typical French "Chasse a Courre" (Hunting with hounds or stag hunting in English) with hunters, horses, dogs and deer. Each large canvas is signed by the artist, Emile Godchaux. The important paintings are in excellent condition with rich and vivid colors, and wonderful details. A one of a kind!
Emile Godchaux (1860-1938), father of Alfred, and also related to Roger the sculptor was a French academic painter whose subjects consisted of maritime seascapes, floral still lifes, and mountain landscapes. Godchaux's work has often been found among the ledgers of art dealers in Bordeaux around the turn of the 20th century, presumably due to his affinity for playing the national lottery; he would be selling his paintings on the public place to pay his debts. He traveled Europe collecting subjects to depict, including the lagoons of Venice and the mountains of the Pyrenees. His style is similar to that of the Barbizon school, which preferred realism over romanticism, and reminiscent of painters such as Théodore Rousseau and John Constable. The artist died in 1938. Listed in the Benezit.

19th Century French Oil Painting on Canvas in Gilt Frame Signed E. Galien-Laloue
By Eugene Galien-Laloue
Located in Dallas, TX
This 19th century impressionist painting was crafted in France, circa 1890. Set in a carved giltwood frame, the artwork painted on canvas, illustrates a picturesque, countryside landscape scene with a forest, barn, chickens, ducks, and a pond in the foreground. The oil on canvas is signed on the back in the lower left corner by the artist, Eugene Galien-Laloue (see last picture). The artwork is in excellent condition with rich, realistic colors; it would make a lovely addition to a study, den, or living room.
We thank Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work, which appears in his archives of the artist.
Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents. He was a popularizer of landscape and street scenes, usually those illustrating autumn or winter settings. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris during la Belle Époque. His paintings regularly include horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual historical content which they document. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier, Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle, Mulhouse, France.
A typical Galien Laloue...
