This French winter landscape painting from the 1800’s sits securely in the original giltwood frame. The hand-carved frame has several long ribbons, with sinuous fabric curls encompassing a repeating border of two distinct flowers. A slender cavetto molding can be seen inside of the carvings, with a repeating scalloped leaf motif that immediately borders the canvas. Signed by the artist in the lower left corner (“Lecler”), this oil on canvas painting is entitled In the Sheepfold. A typical day in the life of a farmer dressed in blue with a gold hat, the agriculteur can be seen tending to a hay feeder. Behind the man is a flock of 15 sheep, mostly depicted with tan wool and white faces and ears, with the exception of a small all-white lamb. Some of the livestock is grazing from the feeders, while four of them (including the lamb) are gathered near a large water trough. A beautiful oil on canvas rendering of a stag hunt, presented in a fluted giltwood frame with a bundled husk border and large, parted leaves in the corners. The painting is signed in the lower right corner by the artist, “H. de Forges”, a member of the Barbizon French school of the late 1800s, who specialized in animal hunt scenes. The vibrancy of de Forges’ painting has not diminished over time; the colors seem to pop right off the canvas. A blue sky with some low-lying white clouds hangs above trees mainly bereft of leaves, indicating it is late autumn. Slender grass, ranging from green to brown, surrounds a watering hole in the middle of a clearing, with a single stag near the water’s edge. Eight white hunting dogs with black and tan markings surround the deer on one side of the pond. Behind the pack is a brown horse ridden by a huntsman dressed in red and black, preparing to sound the hunting horn. Two more riders in red, black, and white, also on brown horses, are emerging from a small hill behind the deer. Hunting, always a very important pastime in France, became one of the more popular genres in 19th century art, along with with quality pastoral and landscape paintings. Realism was a defining feature of the Barbizon School, as artists were attracted to spending more time living and painting in the natural world. Set in the original carved gilt wood frame, this antique oil on canvas was crafted in Europe circa 1860. The pastoral artwpork depicts sheep in stable with dog and shepherd watching on in the background. The painting is signed on the lower right corner by the artist, Frans Lebret. The art work is in excellent condition with great details and beautiful pastel colors; it is set in a splendid and elegant gold leaf frame with floral and leaf motifs in high relief. Artist listed in the Benezit. The canvas has been relined. Frans Lebret (1820-1909) was born in Dordrecht and was known for his Dutch landscapes mainly with sheep. Thanks to financial help from his brother Gerrit who had a sugar estate in Java, and his job as a drawing teacher, Frans was able to survive his first years as a painter.
