19th Century French Sheep Painting in Carved Gilt Frame Signed Charles Clair

About the Item

Set in the original carved gilt wood frame, this antique oil on canvas painting was crafted in France, circa 1880. The pastoral painting, "Shepherd and his flock", depicts a bucolic scene with sheep grazing and coming back to sheepfold with dog and shepherd watching on in the background. The painting is signed on the lower left corner by the artist, Ch. Clair. The art work is in excellent condition with great details and beautiful pastel colors; it is set in a splendid and elegant gold leaf frame with floral and leaf motifs in high relief. Charles H. Clair (1860-1930), was a French painter and engraver of local subjects, landscapes and animals. He was best known for his pastoral paintings of sheep and cows; among his works are pastoral paintings and paintings with shepherds and flocks at pasture, rustic landscapes, shepherdesses, women washing laundry and harvest scenes. Clair regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français where he became a member in 1913. He is listed in the French Benezit with a nice write up and auction prices.
