About the Item
Oil on canvas representing a basket of flowers (peonies, wild flowers, etc.), with a tin watering can in the background.
Signed J. Médard, circa 1890.
Jules Ferdinand MEDARD, painter of flowers, born in Anzin in 1855. French School.
Médard entered the Beaux-Arts school in Lyon, where he was a pupil of Reignier. While he adopted his master's meticulous drawing and precision of detail, Medard also developed a lighter palette, the freshness of which is what makes him so original and successful.
He started to exhibit at the Salon of this city in 1878, and exhibited there regularly until 1920.
"Monsieur Jules Médard's flowers are always masterpieces of meticulousness, jewels of lightness, marvels of elegance and distinction. One could not reproduce flowers, leaves and fruit with more conscientiousness".
E. Charles, Salon lyonnais des Beaux-Arts exhibition, April 29, 1897, André Cormier archives
The museum of Lyon preserves of him “Crown of camellias ".
