“Still Life” Oil on Canvas, Mañanós Martínez, Asterio, 1933

About the Item

Signed and dated. Asterio Mañanós Martínez (1861-circa 1935) began his painting studies in the Municipal School of Drawing of Palencia with Justo María de Velasco and, from 1877, in the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando of Madrid, in the classes of Casto Plasencia and Casado del Alisal . He also frequently visited the Museo del Prado, painting copies of Velázquez's masterpieces. He participated in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts from 1881. In these years, he lived between Madrid and Palencia, where he was commissioned by the curtains and backstage of the Teatro de Recreo Palentino. In 1885 he received a pension from the Provincial Council of Palencia to expand his pictorial training at the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome, which lasted one year. Again in his hometown, he decorated, along with Sabino Ojero, the Teatro de la Peña Palentina. He also opened, in collaboration with Isidro Mallol, a drawing academy, named "Casado del Alisal" in honor of his teacher. In 1889 he moved to Paris for a year to study under the brush of Léon Bonnat's pictorial realism. On his return to Spain, he established his studio in Madrid. From 1908 the Commission of Government of the Senate named him conservator of the works of art of the High Chamber. Fruit of that experience are the great parliamentary pictures that have as subject the sessions and the salons of the Senate. One of his last canvases was an allegory to the Second Republic; this painting belongs to the collection of the Senate. The place and circumstances of his death are unknown: it is known that in 1935 he is alive, though he may have died in Madrid in that same year. Size: int. 60 x 40 cms. Ext: 71 x 51 x 5 cms.
